Highly Sustainable Source

Ideal Omega® products are exclusively sourced from wild Alaska Pollock (Theragra chalcogramma) caught in United States waters. Using Pollock as a source of Omega-3 EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid) is unique and unusual in fish oil supplements. However, a small but steadily growing amount of the most premium and exclusive Omega-3 supplements made worldwide are now made from Alaska Pollock.

Ultra low Bycatch

Ideal Omega® products are sourced from wild Alaska Pollock because it is a sustainable source. The Alaska Pollock fishery in the Bering Sea has a 40-year record of sustainable fisheries management. The fishery is unique among large wild capture fisheries in that it has ultra low bycatch, less than one percent catch of non-target species. Bycatch is one of the most important concepts in sustainable fishing. It’s not enough to just ensure that the target fish species comes back year after year; low bycatch ensures that the entire ecosystem is projected in a sustainable way.

Certified Sustainable Fishing Practices

Many Fisheries around the world face the threat of overfishing through Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated fishing. The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is a global non-profit established to address the problem of unsustainable fishing and safeguard seafood supplies for the future. MSC is the gold standard in sustainable fishing practices certifications. The MSC uses its blue ecolabel to certify seafood products that bear this mark are sourced from sustainably fished and managed fisheries.

Food Fishery Source

Most supplements are made from small, bony fish such as anchovies and sardines. The Peruvian Anchoveta accounts for 70% of total global fish oil. This is referred to as ‘reduction fishery’; this means the entire catch, head to tail, is ground up and ‘reduced’ into fish oil and fish meal. Fish oil goes to supplements, fish meal goes to fish farming (aquaculture). Alaska Pollock, however, is a food fishery. Pollock are caught and fileted for food; the Omega-3 fish oil is made from the leftover trimmings (chiefly the liver), so nothing is wasted.

Single Species Source

Because of the simplicity and transparency of the MSC chain of custody programme, Ideal Omega® consumers can rest assured that their fish oil supplements are what they claim. Some estimates place mislabeling of seafood by fishmongers and in packaged seafood to be as high as 30%. With these issues, the value of a single species source means sustainability is not merely a bold claim for Ideal Omega® but a fact that can be backed up with fisheries assessments, bycatch reports, and sound ecological fisheries management.
